21 SMS Ideas For September
We're waking you up before September even begins, Billie Joe, because we have some SMS campaigns to schedule.
Summer clearance, fall product drops, back-to-school deals, and Labor Day promotions make this month one of the most profitable in ecommerce. Are you prepared to capitalize? Here are some excellent texts to get your SMS calendar started:
Labor Day - September 2
Summer has come and passed, but the fireworks haven't stopped popping just yet—Labor Day is the grand finale for your Q3 sales opportunities and a great way to finish summer strong. Be sure to schedule a series of texts leading up to Labor Day and strategize how you'll stand out in busy inboxes, whether by getting creative with send times or designing an eye-catching MMS. This copy from the Lonely Hearts Club sure grabbed our attention:
We love how Flintts Mints spaced out bonus products for each day of the Labor Day weekend last year.
National Wildlife Day - September 4
National Food Bank Day - September 6
Let's get givin'! Food Bank Day is a great way to build community with your customers by working toward a giving goal as a team.
Instead of discounts today, pledge food donations to your local food bank for every purchase your subscribers make. Or better yet, encourage your subscribers to search their pantries or shop for non-perishable foods and text in pictures of their donations.
Set a goal to help motivate everybody involved.
International Chocolate Day - September 13
There seems to be debate over which day is actually "Chocolate Day," but we're going to defer to the U.S. National Confectioners Association, which lists September 13th as International Chocolate Day, which happens to coincide with the birth of Milton S. Hershey (1857)—heard of him? If we can dig up fun facts like that with about twenty seconds of research, you can send some fun chocolate facts to your list today.
First Day of Fall - September 22
We all know the drill here: light those autumnal candles and bust out the pumpkin spice—it's time for fall puns, cozy merch, and a whole bundle of SMS subscribers throwing on extra layers this month. September marks a psychological shift in consumers as the temperature begins to dip—creating a natural urgency to stock up on cool-weather essentials and fall comforts. Be ready to meet the demand:
National Coffee Day - September 29
Oh, sweet water of the bean. You giveth and you taketh, and it is only fitting we honor you with your own national holiday. Every ecommerce brand should be getting in on the Coffee Day action. As you'll see below, brands like Dude Wipes and Lotus & Luna brilliantly connected their products to the occasion, and I speak for most marketers when I say we'll be upping our caffeine dosages as BFCM nears.
Shoutout to Dude Wipes for this one. We all know this routine well.
Look, look, look! Lotus and Luna threw a sale on all of their cream-colored products in honor of Coffee Day. If they can find a reason, you can find a reason.
The masters of coffee texts, themselves: Death Wish Coffee
As a bean water enthusiast myself, I can't help but admire this informative campaign from Bean & Bean Coffee Roasters. They run a "Coffee of the Month" program and educate their customers about the origin, farm, and farmers behind their carefully curated coffees. They even provide tasting notes to get your mouth watering!
International Podcast Day - September 30
Well, here's an easy one. Everybody has their lineup of podcasts for the gym, commute, and dish-washing sessions, and they can all use some additional content in the queue.
Whether your brand has its own podcast you can plug in or you simply want to share a fascinating episode of a favorite show with your list, SMS is the perfect way to chat about podcasts with customers. Not only is it an opportunity to learn more about your list by surveying their podcast diets, but it's also a chance to build a case for your products by sharing podcast content that argues for their value. For example, Tactical Baby Gear hosts a podcast talking all things parenting—which gives them the perfect platform to build trust and rapport with the customers who buy their childcare products:
As always, you can find more inspiration and SMS resources in our 2024 SMS Marketing Calendar. You can also dive into more of our favorite texts here. We'll be sure to check in when September ends (per Billie's request) with some top-shelf BFCM content; we're aiming to make this year's BFCM the best ever for Postscript merchants. Happy Texting!
